"VW Commercial, "Big Day""
I'm such a softy. Every time I see that VW commercial "Big Day" with the guy who's racing to get to a wedding, I get all wrapped up in it. I feel the distress of being late, the frustration of slow drivers in front of me, and the suffocating torment of waiting behind a train. When he screams, I'm screaming with him, too. By the time he gets to the church I'm completely on edge. He sees the bride. The bride and groom turn toward him. My heart collapses at the sight of my true love about to get married. And then he (but really me) says...and here I always grasp for words that I would say in that situation. My body is poised, racing. The commercial ends. I am left poised on the edge of my couch, unresolved, empty.
This commercial affects me more than most two hour movies! It's crazy! If you like the music, it's by a guy named J. Ralph, called "A Million Miles Away".
UPDATE: I've had to remove the mp3 per request from someone who claims to represent J Ralph (this is unverified so far) due to legal reasons. Sorry.
VW commercials have always been good, but this goes beyond excellence, I think.
When I first saw it, I thought the guy driving the car was the groom and I could feel the sadness in the bride's heart thinking that she was going to be stood up. Then this guy arrives... and pow! it hit me! What a desperate moment... you can see like he's going to cry, eh?
And I want to know... what happens next!

How about the Taster's Choice commercials? They were like a soap opera.

The same actor elopes in the Apple iDVD commercial. Coincidence? He was late to the Big Day and met the rebound girl in Hawaii? Who knows...

great commercial. the guy driving is from that Apple commercial as someone stated before as well as the show Jesse (with Christina Applegate) that unfortunately got cancelled. he played the doctor. I love that song and the whole look of the commercial. does anyone know the real name of the bride? is she a model or an actress?

I *Love* this commericial *so* much. I am the kind of person who channel surfs during commercials-but now I find myself hoping it will come on! I wish I could download it. It's really a great commercial--it conveys so much without absolutely no dialogue. The actors' expressions are priceless--especially the guy rushing to get to the church. I *love* when he screams; and at another point you can see the sweat on his face! The beautiful music contributes wonderfully to the sense of urgency. The minds who created this commercial should *definitely* win an advertising award! Oddly enough though I don't want this commercial to have a follow-up. The Folger's soap opera commercials were great but something that enriches this particular commercial is the cliffhanger ending leaving you to fill in the blanks.

This commercial is great. I cant stand commercials, but i get so excited when this one comes on. Not only is this commercial great, the song in the background "one million miles away" by J. Ralph also makes the commercial so amazing. I think this is the best commercial VW has had to advertise thier car, i cant wait to see part 2:)

Yeah, I just saw that commercial and its awesome. The bride is really pretty. The cool thing about it is that there's several possibilities as to what happened. If you notice the father of the bride, he seems anxious for that guy to come in also, and then you look at the bride and its hard to tell whether she's relieved or saddened or shocked. Then there's the groom-to-be, and he seems like she's going to turn. So, its a multi-faceted problem. Nevertheless, its a very well done commercial.

Ditto, all the way. I'm our society's worse consumer, but this commercial rocked my world, and I loathe commercials. In fact, it worked it's mojo on me so well, I can't wait to get my hands on a VW auto. Haha! God damn, you're the shit for posting the mp3 and the ad. Much aloha.

The lyrics are not opera, it's just the words "A boy... one million miles from home... alone" repeated over and over again. But that does not take away from the fact that the song is incredibly good.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned it yet. This commercial was copied from the ending of the movie "The Graduate" (1967). The movie is definitely worth watching. As far as what the commercial means... in the end love conquers all.

this commercial is awesome! the music is my favorite part 'cuz i'm into techno and house. but the acting is sweet also, especially when the guy is at the train and he's all screamy. and i love the way the preacher's "speak now or forever hold your peace." goes right along w/ the music. awesome, awesome, awesome! gahh! it's so cool!

I had to endure 2 hours of Discovery Channel's terrible Auto transformation/mutation show just for the fact that VW was a sponsor and ran this commercial seven times. And it still wasn't enough. Thanks for the Mp3 posting. It keeps me off bad cable programing, while feeding my urge for watching this commercial over and over.

If you want to download the movie, just watch it and then look in your temporary internet files. I cannot remember where it is in previous versions, but it is hidden in XP. Either search for big_day.mov or Open up my computer and in the space you would type a web address type C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.

The "night time drive" song is a Nick Drake song...That one I have a bit of a problem with, as the song is about Drake's contemplation of suicide (which he later followed through on)...It just seems odd to see it in a "happy" commercial...

I agree with many of the people above that this should win an award of some sort. I remember watching "Big Day" on television like six months ago but then they stopped playing it. But to my surprise last week I saw it again. This is one of my all time favorite commercials, right up there with the Moutain Dew commercial where he duels with the bighorn. Everything about it is perfect, the music, the actors, even the car. Kudos to Volkswagen for coming up with such a great Advert.

my roommate and I were quite caught up in this commercial last fall, and I hadn't seen it in awhile until a couple weeks ago ... now I'm seeing it all the time. I wonder if volkswagon put it back in heavy rotation again because of the overwhelmingly positive reaction to it? it is by far the best commercial I have ever seen! what's especially good is that it is so similar to the end of the movie 'the graduate', but there's this intensity and suspense that is (I think) greater than in the movie.

I must say this commercial is very well done. Unlike most of the replies here I don't mind commercials since I am an advertising major. I do have my favorites but this one just tops them all. Hats off to the advertising creatives who pulled this one off! Also, I wouldn't be suprised if the guy racing to get to the wedding ended up being the photographer;o) just something to think about.

I love the song and commercial. It makes me have a lump in my throat as soon as it comes on. Or if anyone knows where I can download it, I'll be eternally grateful to you!!

I agree with your statement, "This commercial affects me more than most two hour movies!"
The bride is awesomely beautiful What is her name? Who is she?
It's a great commercial, but it would make a better music video. The background music, "One Million Miles Away" is hauntingly mesmerizing. When I watch it I don't even think of it as a commercial. I hate commercials. But this moves me; it would make an excellent music video for the song aptly named "One Million Miles Away".
The VW driver's desperation to reach the bride is not only frustrated by obstacles in a WAY TO LONG of a drive, but she is no closer to him after he arrives at the church. Once married she might as well be physically a million miles away. He'd be losing her forever.
That a 30 second TV spot could speak volumes, says a lot about the genius behind this work of art which so skillfully mixes the right music with the proper visual. I do hope it wins an award!

The background music used in a VW commerical titled "The Big Day" would make an excellent music video for the song aptly named "A Million Miles Away".
The VW driver's desperation to reach the bride is not only frustrated by obstacles in a WAY TOO LONG of a drive, but she is no closer to him after he arrives at the church! Once married she might as well physically be a million miles away. He'd be losing her forever.

It picks up from him walking into the church interrupting the wedding to both of them driving off in his car laughing.. too bad they will never show the commercial again as soon as the new model of jetta comes out ..It sure was awesome . and no he is not James Spader even though they look so much alike and yes he was in the show jesse if not then he should be that guys twin and they should show more of him on tv :) Kevin is hot :)

Does anyone know if there is any sheet music available for "One Million Miles Away?" I must have it!
Isn't the Internet amazing? A thousand fans found exactly what they were looking for; myself included. This is a piece of artwork. Every nuance of the ad was perfectly timed, and perfectly placed. 45 seconds of commercial and a million people want to buy VWs.
Check this out - I did some research on this commercial and many people believe the story has a "more than meets the eye" twist. What if the groom, and the guy driving to the wedding, were gay? Apparently, many companies engage in a practice known as "Vaguely Gay" advertising, which gives a very slight undertone of, err, gayness (improper parlance).
I did not pick this up until I read some articles on the topic (articles found at http://www.commercialcloset.org/cgi-bin/iowa/portrayals.html?record=735). So watch the commercial again and see the expressions on ALL the actors' faces. Makes you think if companies really do use "Vaguely Gay" advertising. So maybe now a million and ten people will buy VWs. But in my opinion, it's straightforward. And fking brilliant. Love this website. Thanks to all who gave me the info I was looking for.

After watching the long version of this, it's clear to me the guy is after the bride, not the groom (see previous posted comment). The short version of this commercial is much different, and leaves more ambiguity.
By the way, how rediculous is it that VW does NOT have this commercial on their website? They've got 10 commercials with cartoons drawn from my 6 year-old niece, but not this one, which has drawn an enormous cult following.

Hey I already posted here on July 3rd, but I had to return, just to see everyone else's continuing comments!! I can't believe what a fan base this commercial has....and how upset I am that I never see it anymore!! I used to shriek every time it came on. It's good to know I'm not the only one. I tell ya, I always thought VW cars were nice, but this commercial really inspired me to think about getting one even more...

oh, nevermind, haha. someone posted a link to the longer version on july 2. is the video reasonably easy to find on kazaa or morpheus? also, does anyone know if it's being played anymore? i read that people were seeing it in late june, but i don't watch much tv, so i missed it. it'd be really great if it was still playing!

I e-mailed the VW advertising department after months of trying to find the title of this song. Per an ad rep, the reason the commercial is not on the VW website is because the actors' contract expired with the advertising company and due to the actors' legal rights VW could not post the commercial on the website. (Hhhmmm, but can - apparently - broadcast it over national televsion??) On another note, it's so damn hard trying to find J. Ralph's CD that has "One Million Miles Away." J. Ralph's website reports being sold out and is trying to negotiate with a recording company to rerelease the albums. Oh, BTW, I think the lyrics are actually: "Away from... One million miles away from... home", not "A boy......." as previously noted. And finally, Has anyone gotten this CD LATELY and where? Thanks!
